Abstract
Gridharasi is one among the most common disorder causing morbidity in productive period of life
affecting the lower limb, leading to walking difficulty. It is characterized by pain, pricking sensation,
stiffness and repeated twitching observed sequentially in buttocks, low back, thigh, back of knee, calf
region and foot with restricted lifting of the affected leg, Due to similar clinical presentation Gridhrasi
may be correlated to sciatica of the contemporary system of the medicine characterized by pain, weakness,
numbness and other discomfort, along the course of sciatic nerve. This has become a very common
condition with an annual estimate of 10 million case reported form India with more prevalence in males,
mostly of 40-60 years of age group.

Introduction :
Vata is known as self born and because of
its dependency, iternity, all pervasiveness,
among all entities this has universal
characters and soul of all living beings and
is held in extreme everywhere. This is the
cause of origin existence and destruction of
all living beings, it has unimaginable energy
and the activator of doshas and is the chief
cause of the groups of disorder. [1]According
to Acharya charak ‘Ghridhrasi’ is one
among the Nanatmja vata Vyadhi &
Samanayaj vata Vyadhi as well as Acharya
charak was described under the Vatavyadhi
in charak Chikitsasthan 28 chapter,Acharya
Sushrut has mentioned in Nidana
purvakhandha chapter 22 in Vatavyadhi
nidana. The sign and symptoms are seen in
Ghridhrasi can be correlated with sciatica in
modern sciences.
Material & Method :
Material and method should be taken from
the various ancient samhitas, text book,
website & research papers.
Definition:
ï‚· According to Acharya Charak it is
charactarised by stambha(stiffness),
ruka(pain), toda(pricking pain) &
spandan(frequent tingling), initially in
hip, waist, back, thigh, knee and calf are
gradually affected.[2 ](C.CHI./56)
ï‚· Acording to acharaya Shushurut when
the ligaments form the heel upto all the
toes are affected by the vitiated vayu,
movement of the lower extremity get
restricted, that is known as Gridhrashi
[3 ] (SU.NI.1/75)
ï‚· According to Acharya Vagabhatta the
heel or the big tendon of the toes being
invated by vata, cause the inability for
lifiting of the leg, this is known as
Gridhrashi.[4] (A.S.NI.15/56)
Nidana Panchaka[5] :
The knowledge of the disease is obtained by
the study of nidana panchak, which are
used in the diagnosis of the disease.
Nidan-Specific nidana of the gradhrasi is
not elaborated in the classics. The root
cause of vatavyadhi is mentioned as either
dhatu khsaya or margavarna. since
Gradhrasi is mentioned as vatavyadhi of
the nanatmaja type and therefore all the
factors that precipitate vata prakopa as well
as nidana factors of vatavyadhi in general
can be taken as the nidan of gradhrasi.
Acording to deseribed Acharya, we are
dividing the nidan in the four groups -
 Aharaj - Ruksh (kodrav), Laghu (mung),
Sheath(ice).
 Viharaj - Excessive intercourse,

Keeping awake at night, jumping,
swimming, Long distance walking,
Excessive exercise, Habit of suppression of
Natural urges.
 Mansik - Chinta (worry), Shokh (grief),
Krodh(Anger), Bhaya(Fear)
 Other - Trauma, Injury to vital organ,
Riding, Falling from animals
Purvaroop[6] (Prodromal symptoms) :
Gridhrasi is a vatavyadhi and a difined
Purvaroop is not mentioned in the classical
texts,qnd as such, Vatavyadhi Purvaroop
can be considered for this as well. The
Purvaroop for all Vatavyadhi is Avyakta
Laksana.Acharya Vijay Rakshita, the
commentator of Madhav nidana has given
clear meaning of the term Avyakta,
according to which symptoms not exhibited
clearly are purvaroop and they are due to
the following facters.
1. Weak causative factors
2. Very less or mild symptoms
3. Less Avarana of Doshas
Thus the symptoms of Gridhrasi exhibited
in the mild form and with lesser intensity
before the actual manifestation of the
disease can be considedered as the
Purvaroop of the Gridhrasi. Mild pricking
pain, mild radiation in the lower extremities
heaviness in the led similar other symptoms
of the gridhrasi in the minimal severity may
be considered as Purvaroop.
Roop[7]:
Charak Samhita has listed the cardinal
symptoms of gridhrasi as ruk(pain),
toda(pricking pain), stambh(stiffiness) and
muhu spandana(frequents twitching) Pain
start form sphik(buttock) which radiates to
kati(waist), uru (thigh), janu(knee),
jangha(calf) and pada(foot) in the peculiar
order. Also sakthi uksepna nigraha
(impossibility to lift the lower extremities is
added to the list of cardinal sign by susruta
samhita and Astanga hridaya.
Bhed :
Acharaya charak described the 2 typea of
Ghridhshi-[8]
1. Vataj
2.Vata-kaphaj
 Symptoms of Vataj Ghridhrshi -
stiffness, pain, throbbing pain,
rigidity, pricking pain, sever
stiffness of joints of knees &
waist[9].
 Vata-kaphaj Ghridhrshi - It is due
to association with kapha-stupur,
heaviness anorexia, poor digestive
& aversion of food are
profound[10].
